From Seed to Pumpkin

We have been reading From Seed to Pumpkin by Wendy Pfeffer. Today we focused on one page in the book. This particular page had illustrations describing tubes in a stem. The students practiced the job of a stem, as described in the words and pictures of the book. We also did the classic celery and food color experiment. I love their sweet, innocent responses to the plants making their own food. I said, "What kind of food did the author say the plant was making?" Correct response: sugar. Kindergarten response: macaroni and cheese :)

Catch up!

We have been doing some major exploring with shapes! We have made shapes with coffee stirrers. You should have seen their faces when I asked them to make a circle! "I can't do that! My straw doesn't curve!" Ahh! Music to a teacher's ear! Haha! We have sorted shapes by color, size, number, etc.

In reading, we have been talking about character and setting. Here we are retelling the story Chicken Little.

We have also been exploring our five senses. Here we are eating popcorn! They come up with some great descriptive words. My favorite is in the sound column. One student said he hears his mom say, "Come and get it!"

Happy Birthday, Gavin!

Shapes Around the Room

They students spent time finding shape around the room. When they found them, they were to draw them on the paper. They had a lot of fun!

Turn and Talk

A big part of kindergarten to speak and listen in group conversation. We practice this every day. Also, the students practice talking and listening to each other. We have a little procedure that we call turn and talk. They turn to their partner and talk about whatever the topic. Here we are turning and talking about a hexagon.
